Antibiotics are administered to kill pathogenic bacteria. However, due to their broad-spectrum activity, it is hypothesized that the antibiotics kill the bacteria and archaea residing in our gut, and alter our gut microflora. Gut microflora contributes to maintain a healthy digestive system, immune system and endocrine function. They contribute to several aspect of our health including maintain the right weight, blood sugar and cholesterol level and several other mental disorders. It has been observed that people who have had administered different types of antibiotics shows different diversity of gut microflora and tend to suffer from one or more ailments like digestive issues, immune disorders, increased body weight, increased blood sugar level, heightened level of anxiety, depression, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. The aim of this project is to establish a correlation between higher dose of antibiotic administration, diversity or alteration in gut microflora and the health issues mentioned above. To narrow down our focus we will only investigate on digestive and immune disorders.
